Experience Head Tracking For The LAMP Words For Life® IOS App

Have you heard the news? Head tracking is now available for the LAMP Words for Life® iOS app! The head tracking access method began with app version 2.44 which was released in August 2023.

Head Tracking for iOS App 2.44

Head tracking for your personal iOS device or Via® speech-generating device is controlled using Apple®’s TrueDepth camera (available on most iOS equipment since 2020). The camera captures the movement of your head and turns it into cursor motion. Start by turning on the head tracking feature in the settings menu of the LAMP Words for Life app.

You may find that a larger iPad screen allowing for larger buttons is helpful for head tracking, especially as you’re getting familiar with this access method. The larger activation area will encourage success with hovering over and selecting buttons. Customize head tracking options in the app settings menu including tracking speed, cursor smoothing, and trigger actions such as hover, blink, smile, and more.

Though the iPad is an accessible and intuitive tool, you may need support for learning a new access method for the LAMP app. Visit our robust online support articles to learn more about head tracking for iOS and other app features.

Head Tracking Access Method

For communicators who have limited or no use of their hands, head tracking may be an effective access solution. If you have head and neck mobility and control, consider this option with your local speech-language pathologist or your local PRC-Saltillo AAC consultant. Testing access methods is crucial to finding the best augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system for you.

Note: Head tracking will continue to be available on Accent® communication devices with the NuPoint head tracking module.

Head Tracking for AAC Vocabulary LAMP Words for Life

Adding the head tracking access method to the LAMP Words for Life app brings another research-based vocabulary to individuals with complex bodies. LAMP Words for Life is a robust language system that combines the power of the Unity® language system and Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP™) approach. The 84-button app is appropriate for both beginning communicators who are just learning to skilled communicators with advanced language skills.

Classes for students, parents, and professionals are available to help you succeed with LAMP Words for Life. Check out the upcoming training offerings from the Center for AAC & Autism.

Head Tracking for All PRC-Saltillo Apps

Making head tracking available for all three PRC-Saltillo iOS apps (LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat®, and Dialogue® AAC) on Via speech-generating devices or your own iOS device creates more opportunities for individuals to communicate. Cara Hubers, director of mobile apps at PRC-Saltillo, said, “We’re excited to expand alternative access methods to our iOS users. This new feature will be an entry point to meaningful communication for children and adults.”
