Can’t make it to ATIA or want to participate again? This online session will show you how to use My AAC Literacy Journal with emergent and conventional learners. Watch the strategies come to life through video case studies highlighting real students. Learn how to create a dynamic literacy profile that celebrates progress and follows your student to their next learning environment.
Check out Monarch Reader™, a free online library of thousands of digital books designed for beginning readers of all ages, from our friends at Building Wings™. You’ll find age-respectful books on a variety of topics—including this year’s My AAC Literacy Journal—that have been developed intentionally for older, emergent readers.
You can use Monarch Reader to display and read books on your AAC device. Someone with an Accent® device with Empower® software can read one of these digital books with their device. Communicators who use a NovaChat® device or the TouchChat® app can do a split screen with their vocabulary on one side and their book on the other. With technology, readers can turn pages with eye tracking, head tracking, or a switch. This allows the AAC reader to independently turn pages and explore books.
PRC-Saltillo teamed up with Building Wings to bring even more LAMP Words for Life® and Unity® resources into your classroom. These tools give educators practical ways to support language, literacy, and authentic communication with your students who use AAC.

Getting Ready to Read is a free one-of-a-kind literacy and communication instructional program designed to teach word recognition, decoding, spelling and icon sequencing using an AAC device. This instructional program is the result of more than a decade of collaboration between the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with Dr. Karen Erickson and Dr. Gretchen Hanser, Bruce Baker of Semantic Compaction, and PRC-Saltillo. Lesson plans and support materials are available for several AAC vocabularies. Find them all on the AAC Language Lab.
Teaching individuals using AAC how to read and write is a unique challenge!
